April
19, 2003--Despite the rain a large crowd came out Sunday, April 19 to the Houston Polo Club to see the Henry S. Miller Polo Team win the USPA Governors Cup 4-6 Goal Tournament for the Southwest Circuit. The HSM Polo team of Vaughn Miller (1), Isidro Olivas (4), Will Tankard (1) and Ross Haislip (A) substituting for Greg Miller (A), defeated the Lockton Capital Team of Manuel Chalde (AT), John Alexander (2), Hernan Tejera (4) and Tim Kelly (A) in an exciting overtime score of 8-7. It was an intense 4 chukker match that was delayed by rain and almost stopped by darkness, the HSM team came out strong in the 1st chukker as they had done throughout the tournament scoring 3 goals to 1, but the Lockton team fought back by scoring 2 penatly shots in the 2nd chukker. The 3rd chukker was neck and neck with HSM leading 5 to 4 and some spectacular plays by HSM 4 goaler Isidro Olivas, including a 150 yard goal from aan amazing neck shot. Lockton came back strong in the 4th chukker marshalled by 4 goaler Hernan Tejera scoring 2 goals and lead by 1 until HSM tied it at the end of the chukker. Both teams came back for a sudden death overtime chukker as darkness began to fall on the club. In a incredible display of speed and horses both teams ran with the ball the distance of the field each steeling the ball away from the other just before scoring. Finally HSM was awarded a Penalty 3 shot when Vaughn Miller as fouled by Lockton's Hernan Tejera while heading towards goal and Will Tankard scored the winning goal.
